Charities Appeal
Hi my name is Barry de Jager and I am the author of Together, We Will Get Through This.
Today I'd like to share with you the biggest reasons to why I have written this book. Drawing the shortest straw, at the age of 10, life took a pound of flesh from my youth. My parents separated, a broken family with 5 children and uncertainty of what the future may hold we ended up staying with my father, in emergency accommodation for homeless people, because the physical and emotional abuse from our stepfather became unbearable.
It became clear when alcohol and drugs became the sought-after remedies from my father's despair, that he also was not the ideal parent to look after us. It did not take long for the welfare of children to intervene and we were taken into care as a matter of urgency. Our lives changed rapidly. Although it was not always easy being hundreds of miles away from our parents, friends and loved ones, my newly discovered role as a father to my brothers and sisters, the endless tears, emotional scars, and spiritual damage I have learned to flourish within the realm of uncertainty.
In all its forms, as time moved on, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually our needs were met by Charlotte Theron residential care home for children in a town called Bethlehem, situated in the Eastern Free-State province of South-Africa. Going there ultimately saved our lives. It wasn't until my four-year-old son, Luwan, laying on a bed fighting for his life in his efforts to survive stage 4 childhood leukaemia that I have realised how our Creator and life in the children's home had prepared me for that moment.
Every time I kissed Luwan good night, saying goodbye for good preparing myself for the worst, the next day he would wake up and it was the kind gestures, love and care that raised us from the dead. I decided to write a book in my efforts to pay it forward in support of those charities that helped save Luwan's life.
Unable to give thanks to everyone that crossed our path during this turbulent time, I believe by sharing our story and supporting these charities that I can shed a Light of hope, in the valley of fear uncertainty and doubt, wherever there are families going through similar circumstances dealing with life-limiting diseases.
Please support these charities by buying this book and giving extra to ensure that the LUWAN-LIKE-STORIES will be made easier. God bless you and your family. Thank you for your support and your willingness to give and help change the lives of others and if that is for the sake of only one person then this appeal would have certainly served the purpose of and made it worthwhile for me to spend 150 nights within a cancer ward.
I believe that the secret of living is within the willingness to give freely. Thank you so much for supporting these charities that made a significant difference in Luwan’s life.
I, the author, would like to acknowledge and thank the following charities for their incredible support during our difficult journey:
